My vet advises against it after I found a very healthy gravid female leo
dead in her tank. She had been entering the hide box occupied by her
mate and laying eggs there without my knowledge. Her death was caused
by sand impaction - he said that she was full of sand from one end to
the other. The fine sand formed a paste inside. Even though she had a
bottle cap of calcium and her meal worms were dusted with minerals and
vitamins, she may have had a need for extra calcium that she attempted
to fill by eating sand. He advised using substrate larger than a gecko
mouth - like polished river rocks. I plan to use these over the ground
walnut hulls I've been using in my other tanks. Seems that they would
hold heat well also.
