As I said before, the feed store "ground limestone" is the same stuff at
a fraction of the cost. I think anyone is nutz to pay the price for the
Calci-Sand.
I would rather a Leo ingest a bit of calcium than silica, when going for
a naturalistic set up. If the gek is going to vacuum up all the
substrate in the cage, it would seem moot, no matter what you use. I
have kept Leos on a CaCo3 substrate from 1 day old on up, no problems in
over 3 years.
That said, I believe that the natural habitat would be rocks. Such as
outcroppings of bed rock, so the bottom of the cage would be mostly
slabs of shale, or whatever is handy, with some sand like material as a
filler in between. A real pain to clean, so I have not tried it, but now
that I have said this, I think I may take one cage and give it a try.
They come from places like Afghanistan, dry and rocky, but not a desert
like the Sahara.
