I had never thought of doing that. They do blast into it, and I worried
about injury, but after 3 years w/o any problem I stopped thinking about
it.
The problem with padding a dish is that it would allow a surface that
the crix could walk up and escape. I am open to suggestions ???
You need a ceramic dish with vertical sides that is highly glazed. The
best I have found are sold at the pet stores and on the NET as "rabbit
feeding dishes", they conform to the above criteria and have a thick lip
around the top. I cut a piece of plywood with a hole so that the dish
will fit down in the hole, being held in by the lip. Then you can put
the dish up high by attaching the plywood holder to the side of the
cage. This gets the food up where the animals live. I never see mine on
the ground, except to get water, females go to the flower pots that have
the live plants to lay eggs.
One word of warning, a food dish up high like that may also become a
favored sleeping place, so be prepared to put in more than one. In my
breeder cage I had to put in three, one for eating and one for each
animal to sleep in !!!
>>Do you pad the dish ? So they don't hurt there nose? Burke
