The fine structure on the toepads can be damaged temporarily or in worse cases definitely when geckoes are pulled off their substrate with force, like what happens when they are caught. If the damage is temporarily, the functionality should be restored after one or two shreddings. But indeed, sometimes they are ripped off the substrate by such force, the microstructures are permanently damaged. I am afraid this is what had happened tou your gecko,
