For a Leo, the wet hide, use potting soil. Attempt to get some without
perlite. It is a foamed glass product and should be avoided. The
vermiculite is made from mica and will not cause a problem, even if they
eat it, but why would they ??? For that matter they will not eat the
perlite either, but if you feel it, is it is a bit sharp. Remember this
is their bedroom, not the substrate they hunt on. They ain't gonna eat
it.
Another option is peat moss, or peat mixed with vermiculite. You could
even use wet paper towels in the hide. It is a big deal to provide them
with the wet hide, less so as to what you put in it. Cut the hole in the
top of the "box" these girls can be real diggers, helps contain the
mess.
If you are new to gex, I offer my axiom (it has served me well over the
years), when in doubt, DO NOTHING. Nature has a way of sorting things
out and Leos are VERY robust gex. Just provide the basics and they will
thrive. Never panic and above all else use common sense (tremendous lack
of it in all areas, not just gex), these pups live outside in the wild
and do just ducky without us.
