Yes. They could be making an adjustment to the substrate so they will be more
comfortable, or they could be digging to lay eggs.

You should get rid of that, it is not a good substrate for leos. For beginner leo
keepers I recommend totally non-digestable substrate, like paper towels or
indoor/outdoor carpet. You do not want to risk impaction from ingestion of substrate.
Beginners don't usually have the powers of observation more advanced gecko keepers
have to see when this is happening anyway.

Another problematic substrate. The manufacturer claims safe, but I know of cases of
impaction with it.

These are much shyer geckos, I had a little girl "love" two to death before I figured
out why they were dying. They also need a more humid environment. I have mine on a
combo of sphagnum peat moss and medium grade orchid bark.
