Sometimes if there are rocks or tight areas the tail can be caught , and
you can lose a tail without being involved. I have never had a leopard lose
a tail though. I think most of those that came to me with out tails as
rescue or dumps to adopt out had been males caged together. I have also
seen wholesalers caging way too many together end up with nipped tails.
If you handle the gecko wrongly it can happen easily. You may even see the
tail begin to break. I have seen partial breaks in other species that have
healed with out dropping. Sometimes the healed scar will produce a mini
tail. I had one Phelsuma abbotti produce a small second tail on top of the
original where it had a bite. It developed what looked like a shark fin.
