I agree on what you say about materials of the same mesh and gauge blocking
the exact same amount of light. Unfortunately I have never found aluminum
screen as fine gauged as the copper at 0.011 diameter. I also doubt it would
be anywhere near as strong as the copper and would not dissipate heat from
basking lights as well. Forget about the automobile exhaust bombarding the
screen. The big problem here is gecko feces bombarding the screen with its
associated acids.
I can also agree that at $1.96 to $4.05 per square foot depending on the
amount, it is a premium priced screen material, but the general rule of
thumb is "you get what you pay for"
I do considerable work with diurnal gecko lighting and for most species
being kept a 12.5% increase in light actually reaching the geckos is welcome
benefit with no additional energy or fixtures being used. Considering the
additional cost of electricity it would take to make up the 12.5% increase,
the copper screen is a bargain for situations where the increased light
levels are needed.
