Re rock substrate for gex:  I bought some of those smooth jelly bean or 
larger size polished rocks intended for fountains or bonsai. As they are 
smooth, there are few nooks and crannies for bacteria to accumulate. The 
stones can be easily removed and rinsed with boiling hot water to clean 
them. I only feed mealworms in a high dish, so they can't get out and 
hide. I monitor the inpur of crichets and remove those that are uneaten. 
The latrine area consists of a dish which can be removed and washed.
