I generally buy the higher end double tube 4' fixtures from Home Depot.
Before using them, I replace the ballast with an electronic. I don't buy
the cheapest (Lights of America) because they wire up the ballasts from
parts instead of using integrated ones. That way it uses less space.
That also means there is no space for an electronic ballast. The cheaper
fixtures also don't have reflectors that extend down low enough... if
you set it on top of the cage it would rest on the tubes rather than the
reflectors. FWIW... I've found LOA fixtures eat tubes faster than most.
Electronic ballasts are desirable for several reasons... less power for
more light output, less heat, instant on, if one tube goes out the other
will continue to light, tubes last longer. The cheap fixtures work fine
with timers... they just eat expensive Reptisun 5.0s too fast!
