Hello Camille,
If they have a dark and light line down their side then they are most likely
Phelsuma lineata ssp. Recently LLL Reptile had some Wild Caught(WC)Phelsuma
lineata for sale as P. dubia. Try this link to see if they may be P.
lineata, possibly P. lineata chloroscelis. P. l. chloroscelis is about the
same size as P. dubia.

In general Phelsuma prefer a lot of light to be happy and need a basking
area where they can warm up to their preferred optimal temperature and then
move to a cooler part of the tank to thermo regulate. Usually a darker than
normal color is a result of stress, improper lighting or temp, or an ill/WC
gecko with a high parasite load.
If you are not sure of the origin (Captive Bred CB vs. WC) a trip to a
non-domestic vet could be in order.

Subject: [Gecko] Dubious dubia?

My dad recently acquired a pair of geckos labeled
Dubia Day geckos. When we looked them up in Sean
Mckeown's book they didn't exactly match the photo.
At the time of purchase they were phelsuma green in
body with bluish tails. They darkened at home, but
the same way my grandis do--like someone turned off
the internal light--so they are still greenish in
tint, not reddish like the ones pictured. Their size
is about right, though. Any ideas? (yeah, I know, a
photo would help, I'm working on it) Could it just be
color variation? They do occasionally lighten up
again, just to let us know we weren't imagining their
color when he bought them! They are somewhat
inquisitive, and quick to take interest when the tank
is opened.
