I have used the following to get rid of fruitflies (don't know if gnats
would be attracted to the same thing:
- jar with water, dishwashing soap and beer/juice/overripe fruit combo
(the soap serves to break the surface tension of the water so that flies
landing on it or adjacent to it would easily slip in and drown, while
the beer/juice/fruit combo attracted the flies in the first place)
Of course the opening of the jar will need to be modified so that your
animals will not be able to access the inside of the jar but the gnats
will.
