Hi all,
I got in on this thread a bit late, but I think I can add two tiny morsels
of info:
1. True, they only eat decaying organic matter, but not necessarily your
plants: Peat moss is organic matter also, and larvae can also feed on root
tips. As you have probably noticed, the larvae never leave the substrate.
Also, be aware that adults do not have functioning mouthparts; only the
larvae actually eat anything.
2. I have very good luck with sticky-yellow-card traps, i.e. whitefly traps.
They are non-toxic (just a yellow card with tanglefoot or equivalent on it)
I just hang one above the tank. Of course, this will never rid them 100%,
but you can change the card weekly, bi-weekly, or whatever, to monitor
populations.
There are any number of effective pesticides that will eliminate fungus
gnats in general, but obviously when discussing gecko tanks it is a moot
point.
I've spent lots of time with fungus gnats....
Regards,
Neal Grant
