Fortunately, Black Widows are very rare in my area. In fact, I've never found 
one myself�and I've looked. I realize spiders of size compete for crickets, 
but since we were talking about ants and gnats, I assumed the predator would 
match the prey. I wondered about spider predation on geckos; again, I assumed 
the size of the spiders chosen would not be a threat to the geckos; rather, 
the other way around.

Spider hatchlings have a way of getting into almost all my cages and even the 
rearing bins I use for mealworms. Strangely enough, I have only found spiders 
a few times in with my crickets. I assumed the spiders were in the shipment 
from the cricket breeder. But certainly your words of caution bear heeding.
