Dear Melody & All,

I am not aware of any P.m.madagascariensis/P.m.kochi crossbreds.
However, crossbred P.m.grandis and P.m.kochi do exist. These hybrids
even occur in the wild! I found several populations hybrids in Antsohihy
and near Ankarafatsika in western Madagascar. These populations had
normal forms of both subspecies including some juvenile and adult
specimen of a clearly hybrid between the two. Later I succeeded to
crossbreed a P.m.grandis male with a P.m.kochi female. The result was
one female and two males (out of 2 double eggs) that looked exactly like
the ones I saw in the wild 1.5 year earlier. The coloration was like
P.m.kochi, with the same lateral marbling, but with the red pattern of
P.m.grandis. Unfortunately these hybrids never bred themselves.

Could you post an image of the females?

Regards,

-Emmanuel

Subject: [Gecko] P. mad-mad complex cross-breeding

Hi all,

Reading the recent fascinating cepediana discussion got me thinking. I
keep Phelsuma mad-mads, and I have two females that have laid plenty of
eggs, but none viable. These females are a bit lighter colored than the
rest, and I got them from a non-gecko person who'd been given them, so I
have no chance of tracing origin. I have wondered if they are
p-m-kochi, or perhaps some cross. I have decided that they are
"display" animals, but I am still curious as to the problem.

So my question is -- has anyone ever cross-bred P-m-kochi with
P-mad-mads, and if so were the eggs viable?

Thanks,
Melody
