Dear Magnus, James, All,

It looks like you are describing the yellowish-red colouration of some
older P.cepediana males. Around the femoral pores some adult males show
a yellowish-reddish colour that continues on the tale. But this is found
on white and green ventral coloured animals and has nothing to do with
regional variations.

The population of P.cepediana is way more consistent then P.borbonica
spp on Runion. At least all the animals at a given location are
similar, except for the size and shape of the red pattern on their
backs. The pattern itself, parallel lines and the specific head pattern
is the same for all animals. You can describe the pattern, with
P.borbonica you can not. The females in P.cepediana seem to be less
homogenous (more variation).

Another interesting fact, not mentioned before, is that the females from
the upland form are more homogenous and resemble more a "male's" pattern
than the lowland forms.

If you go to Mauritius, let me know, I can give you some advice where to
look for P.guimbeaui rosagularis and P.g.guimbeaui. I know many people
that went and never saw them, even when they were in the right area. I
also know some good places to stay. I will be there this May for 9th
time on my way to Rodrigues in another attempt to find P.edwardnewtoni
(or whatever Phelsuma). I was there twice, without success (only
P.cepediana and P.ornata that where introduced on Sandy and Cocos
Island).

Regards,

-Emmanuel

Hi James,

I am here and following the discussion. Very interesting, but I do not
feel that I have any substance to put into it. All my P.cepediana are
green bellied, and origin from Port Louis, and as I wrote earlier I had
the impression that the "highland" form was supposed to be red/brown
bellied. When I bought my first P.cepediana lots of years ago, from you
all know who, he showed me some animales with redish/brown colours. That
redish/brown colour started in the middle of the belly and continued
along the tails underside.Thats what he called highland form.Since I
have never been to Mauritius ( yet) I do not know what moore to
say.Maybe its the same as with the P.borbonicas. Lots of variation
between individuals from different locations ,or for that matter the
same locations.
