Of all the lists I peruse relevant to herpetology/herpetoculture, the GGA
list is one of the friendliest and most informative resources out there.
The diversity of experience and interests here is simply incredible. Truly
an international interaction.
The keyboard-written word is all too easy to misinterpret as we are not
professional writers and sometimes fail to convey our true intentions and/or
emotions. Miscommunications are certain to occur. In most cases, they are
just that; comments that are misconstrued and someone feels poorly because
of them.
I do not know of any member or non-member that comes across here with a
holier-than-thou attitude. Many of the highly experienced folks here that
have kept some of the most exotic and rare gecko species are the first to
offer assistance to the neophyte needing advice regarding their leopard
geckos. My own gecko keeping has been dramatically reduced for a variety of
reasons over the last couple of years. I still, however, have a nice colony
of leopards and certainly do not feel the poorer for it. Some of my leopard
geckos and I have known each other for over a decade and their basic
husbandry needs have allowed me to keep them through some interesting times.
I have more valuable data archived from this list for reference use than any
other list I subscribe to. This is in spite of the fact that geckos
represent a minority of my current reptile collection.
As a general rule, the geckophiles seem to interact in a more cooperative
manner than many other special interest herpetoculturists. The venomous
reptile keepers, for instance, could certainly take some lessons from the
gecko enthusiasts.
Herpetoculture is a science where EVERYONE is able to contribute. I have
received excellently caging ideas from complete beginners that simply came
up with a neat new idea. There are no advantages given to anyone relevant
to race, religion, gender, etc. It is truly an equal opportunity avocation
that one can take as far as one would like.
The folks that operate this list are to be congratulated and offered our
thanks for their efforts. The officers of the GGA do a great job and give
us a part of their lives in doing so. These are things that must be kept in
perspective and not taken for granted.
I encourage all beginners, experts, lurkers, etc., to stay and enjoy the
benefits here. If one feels slighted, make sure there has not been a simple
misunderstanding before assuming the worst.
In my next life, I have requested reincarnation as a male leopard gecko, CB,
high yellow, jungle pattern. My keeper should most certainly be subscribed
to this list. I would prefer a naturalistic and spacious vivarium with two
females of similar physical beauty. The only deviation from normal
husbandry that I would ask would be a wee bit of a nice single malt in the
water dish every other week or so....
Night all.
