Phyllurus platurus is the most common & widely distributed Phyllurus- most of the others have extremely narrow distributions (two are listed as Rare by the Queensland government). P. platurus is common in some Sydney suburbs in houses near some sort of bushland with sandstone outcrops- I have found them in the garage of friends down there. It is the only one that is common in captivity. In fact, I don't actually think that any other species are in captivity in Australia.
There are plenty of herps in various suburban areas in Australia though Diplodactylus & Strophurus sp. are generally not some of them (Though I have read that Strophurus spinigerus is common in suburban Perth.). The Eastern Bearded Dragon- Pogona barbata is still quite common in Brisbane (where I live). I actually pulled one off a street on the way home today & released it nearby in a park. As a kid they were my favourite lizard & we used to catch them frequently. Most houses in Brisbane have been invaded by the Asian House Gecko Hemidactylus frenatus which are now extremely common, easily the commonest gecko. The only other gecko found with some frequency in the suburbs of Brisbane (in my experience) is the Robust Velvet Gecko Oedura robusta. I found a young Eastern Blue-tongue Tiliquia scinoides in my backyard a few weeks ago, another very common lizard in our suburbs.

that's interesting, i never thought of it that way. You have easy access to
a lot of cool herps though. Strophurus and diplodactylus especially. While
we're on the topic of phyllurus, i've often read that they are very common
among humanized areas ie. the suburbs. If that's true, then they are pretty
common, aren't they? what about other herps like strophurus, diplodactylus,
bearded dragons, etc?
