Actually, GPL is very much about benefits for the *developer*.

It is not about benefits for *investors* or in general a social 
class that many years ago was known as "the gentry".  One of 
the biggest strengths of GPL is to protect developers against 
abuses by the gentry.  It was this kind of abuses that spawned 
the creation of the original GPL.  It is this kind of abuses 
that are the motivation for the changes in GPL-3.
