Obviously it was not a single incident, rather it was a general trend of lots of incidents. In the printer incident, to which I think you refer, he certainly was a user. I was thinking of another (one of probably many others) in which RMS was a developer, (underpaid staff programmer / grad student at MIT), and in effect lost his own work due to a commercial spin-off. I had a very close call as a grad student.
