Hello --

> Are you guys going to be doing GSoC for 2008?

As Al pointed out, we will do GSoC in 2008 if Google holds the
program.

We have spent some time thinking about how to make it more successful
for gEDA. IMO, our biggest change for 2008 will be to try to throw
support to the student developers who start early and/or are already
working with us.

The reason is this: Many students (understandably) want some money
for hacking code over the summer. For some of them, GSoC is a cool
summer job. However, this doesn't necessarily lead to the best result
for the gEDA project since many students don't finish their stuff
before the summer (and the money) runs out. Unfortunately, it's too
easy (and too common) for students to say "good bye" at the end of the
summer (and money), leaving us with a pile of useless, half-finished
code.

We want people who will stick around and continue contributing to the
project long after the summer is over. The only way to know if that
will happen is to work with people who have proven themselves by
already contributing to the project. They're the folks who do it
because they're really interested in the project; for them the money
is nice, but is only *part* of the reason they work on gEDA. Students
like that are the ones we want to support.

Therefore, students thinking about participating in GSoC 2008 and gEDA
may want to start early in thinking about what kind of project they
want to work on, contact us early, and start fiddling with the code as
early as they can!

Cheers,

Stuart
