I wonder if Google would consider "managing" additional donations, from
a point of view of infrastructure paying the students, and keeping
everyone working on the same terms and conditions.

In any case, it can't hurt to approach them about it (unless the
response might be... if you can afford to pay students, we're not going
to fund you).
