The simple timing thing turned out to be a silly bug but one that I'm
surprised hadn't affected 64 bit, and O3 just worked. This change isn't
all that amazing, but it's not completely trivial so I figured I'd give
people a chance to look at it. If no one cares about the details, I'd
like to get this committed quickly since it makes x86 unusable on 32 bit
hosts.
