I am afraid that I do not have that much experience with Kernels, but do you 
mean that the compiled kernel I am using is missing something? I am using the 
one found on PARSEC benchmark website (http://www.cs.utexas.edu/~parsec_m5/) 
version 2.6.28.4

I noticed the same thing, even after booting, the /sys directory is still empty
