I set the environment as follow:

export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/protobuf/bin
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/local/protobuf/lib
export LIBRARY_PATH=$LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/local/protobuf/lib
