I think that the AOL interest in a non-Microsoft system is a
good thing. It could do more to keep or promote real standards
than anything that we can expect from the government. The DOJ
absolution provided to Microsoft in the "settlement" proposed in
the antitrust case has made that very clear.  This is NOT
because I like AOL. I dropped them quite a while ago because of
their "Microsoft mentality" that they had to control everything. 

As others have pointed out, there will still be major players
keeping Linux from becoming an AOL operating system, and the
Linux connection would give AOL incentive to keep standards
standard. I think that AOL will not be able to overrun Red Hat
Linux as they have other software vendors because Linux is not a
single company product. 

On another note. I would really appreciate it if posts to this
list were kept to inline messages rather than posted as
attachments. The attachments that are not formatted require that
I cut and paste them to a word processor to get the lines word
wrapped.
