Actually I need to make a correction, if you use vga=791, you need to have 
framebuffer compiled into the kernel. Also, it will not take effect until 
you begin booting the kernel. If you have a s**tty boot screen, you can get 
rid of the menu and use the old prompt. That's what I did with Slackware 8.  
There is a bootmenu.b and a (boottext.b) something like that and a soft link 
from boot.b -> to one of those just switch it. Now when it boots, it doesn't 
give me a nasty red screen with options in a box, instead I get the old LILO 
boot: prompt.
As far as getting a graphical startup selection menu like Mandrake, I think 
those are written from scratch. so maybe you could find a Mandrake box and 
copy the boot.b file from it.
