Dude, that's exactly what 802.11b is. All you need are
two 802.11b cards ($150) and two pringle's can ($20)
type antennas, and there ya go. Now that will just get
you peer-to-peer, unless one of the cards is in an
Internet gateway box hardwired to a land line.

Now, line of sight would be good, as water (organic
material like leaves) between the two antennas will
screw it up. And metal, electrical fields, your mom,
etc, will probably degrade the signal. But
theoretically, it can be done on the cheap. There are
