Buck: This article - http://www.littlewhitedog.com/reviews_other_00011.asp - has a pretty good writeup of how to dual-boot Win2k and Linux, using the Windows boot loader. I just used this exact procedure with Mandrake 8.1 and W2k with almost the same setup you have - primary HDD is a 4.3gb dedicated to Windows, secondary drive is a 30 gig with a FAT32 partition, shared by Windows and Linux, and several EXT3 partitions on which Mandrake resides.
A quick summary of the article: - install linux on 2nd HD, *making sure* not to install Lilo on the MBR and also making sure to create a boot floppy. In my case I made a /boot partition on /dev/hdb7 and put LILO there. - copy /boot to a floppy (in my case "dd if=/dev/hdb7 bs=512 count=1 of=/mnt/floppy/linux.bin") - boot back into windows, copy linux.bin from the floppy to the root of your windows install (c:\) and modify Win2K's boot.ini with a line to point to c:\linux.bin Your mileage may vary, but it works like a champ for me. All that said, you could certainly follow John or Doug's advice, too. This is just a different way of doing things. best regards, -Mike Melancon, Stillwater, Oklahoma (former Baton Rougean who stays on BRLUG list to keep up with y'all) -----Original Message----- From: "Cap'n Buck" [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, April 24, 2002 6:40 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [brlug-general]HELP??? Ok, Are there any Mandrake "guru's" out there?? E-mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] OR [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Here is the 'deal'. I have a dual-booted Celeron 400. The first ("C") drive has WIN 2000 on it. I use it at home to do work. It's a 15 gig Maxtor. The 'second' drive, is a 6 gig Maxtor and presently has Caldera 2.3 on it. I am not happy with the Caldera and wish to *remove* or "overlay" it with MD ver 8.1. The last time I did the MD 8.0 install, it "overewrote" the boot sector on the "C" drive and did NOT allow me to even access it. ANY 'ideas' on how to keep this from happening, again?
