Go for it. Mac OSX is the most interesting UNIX development since the Linux kernel.
I suspect that you will be very interested in its BSD core. Don't be fooled by the Aqua GUI, it is UNIX in its soul. I've played with iBooks that friends owned and I can say that it is a very well built machine and fun to use. Like the Mac "switch" commercials state, it isn't "klunky" like Wintel laptops.
