A simple email virus could destroy not only the live data, but the backups as well, for one. There's also no means of off-site backup, meaning all is lost in the event of a building disaster.
Tapes are still the ideal solution. Unfortunately, tape drives haven't kept up with hard drives in terms of price and capacity, so they're an expensive solution. The cheapest I've seen is the OnStream product line. Those drives seem to cost about twice as much as a hard drive, which isn't really that bad. Tapes seem to be in the $30-50 range. Slightly less desirable, but growing in populary is CDROM and DVD backups. This is certainly cheaper, but in most cases requires manually changing of media during backup unless you're willing to limit the size of the backup set by only choosing certain files and directories.
