Concerning user friendly installs, I think the time is coming very soon where we will see a one-click distribution, possibly based on the excellent hardware detection routines in Knoppix. Basically, I imagine one screen where you are asked: "This will install Linux on your PC with a bunch of defaults. Click OK to do an automatic install, or click Expert Mode for more options."
And at that time, the AOLers will invade... ;) John Hebert John, With regard to the one-click install, we are there now. With Xandros, if you select the default install, the only input required from the user is to provide an "Administrator" password, create one "user", and insert a blank floppy and click "ok" to create a boot floppy. Well, he/she also has to remove the floppy and install CD before the reboot, but thats it! Its based on Debian, so its not "bleeding edge" (version 1.0 is running KDE 2), but it is very stable. I have yet to have it fail to find any hardware or to find it incorrectly. Can ANY M$ OS do that? Hell, I did a reinstall of 98SE week before last and just to get my ATI TV Wonder VE card working I had to do 8, READ THAT EIGHT!!!, reboots just to get the drivers properly loaded and the card working. Xandros found it and configured it without me even realizing it. I didn't even expect it to work under Linux, but when I first booted up under Xandros and heard white noise coming from the speakers, I realized it was working. After a bit of looking around and installing MoTV, I now have TV on my Xandros desktop. Bring on the AOLers!
