There is a /dev/MAKEDEV in OpenBSD, and googling around for "makedev 
freebsd" returns results that make me think it is supposed to be there. Was 
it possibly deleted?

BTW: I love this list. I didn't know much about MAKEDEV and mknod until 
reading the exchange between Mat and Abbott. A quick trip to man and info 
pages and now I understand what MAKEDEV is (a script that calls mknod to 
build special files, like for hardware devices such as floppy drives).
