Howdy, You may want to start with the RUTE Guide (http://rute.sf.net). As far as a book or website that lists and defines the various acronyms, I don't know of any. I recommend using Google: "man weirdacronym" example: "man devfs".
There are _many_ Linux newbie oriented websites out there, just google for "linux newbie" and see what ya find. Also, you may want to try installing Cygwin if you have a M$ Windows box at home: http://www.cygwin.com. Cygwin is a port of Unix tools/apps to M$ Windows. It includes the man pages and the info help system, which is a good way to learn about various Unix/Linux commands and acronyms. Good luck!
