Laptops are really getting that cheap, as the market gets saturated and 
production has ramped up. However, you should definitely shop around on 
the Internet. I found a number of price comparisons for the Sony Vaio at:

along with customer reviews. Compare prices there to models you are 
interested in.

My employer bought a Sony Vaio PCG-FX390P 
(http://www.epinions.com/content_69931470468) for me about a year ago 
and it works pretty well, though the case construction is too 
lightweight for heavy use.
