First, you need to kill gpm, a pointer program that conflicts with X.  I'm told 
you can point your mouse to gpmdata but never have.  

Have you checked your X logs?  /var/log/xdm.log, /var/log/XFree86* will tell 
you why the set up is not working.  My bet is the mouse.  You might do a search 
for it and XFree or protocal to find out how to talk to a scroling mouse.  

Woody is new to me, but the program anXious used to be good.  You might also 
try XF86Setup, with capital letters.  It's a graphical configuration tool that 
loads up a simple X interface that can be manipulated by keyboard.  I have yet 
to master the XF86Config-4 format and still use old XF86Config files when I 
can.
