The terms specify which OS and what applications are allowed. Particularly
with systems donated by........ you guested it..... Micro$oft. Therein lies
the rub. The answer maybe the PHB is not allowed to install non-Micro$oft
software.

The M$ rep at the ACM OS shout off a few weeks promised that there would be no
further restrictions for the no cost software M$ was going to provide CS
students at LSU. He claimed that they would simply be bound by the (already
unacceptable) EULAs M$ wants to foist on everyone. I wish that I had known
enough to ask him what kinds of restrictions he had put on LSU staff.

Sole source contracts are a big no-no in normal state purchasing. This should
especially be true in the fiercely competitive world of software. If M$ has
pulled this on LSU, the people who got suckered should hang their heads in
shame.

So, is this silly restriction on superior software campus wide? Has someone
really sold LSU's soul to Redmond? Are all LSU accademic, health center,
library and traffic records now open to Back Orifice and Microsoft's infamous
desktop?
