Other methods:

10.  Let the battery run out - the do nothing option.
 9.  Remove Hard drive - proved effective.
 8.  Drop laptop until it goes off.
 7.  Symbolic forgiveness of sins by baptism.
 6.  Dry it in the microwave.
 5.  Short battery. - also proved to provide fireworks.
 4.  Apply 120 VAC to power plug - without transformer.
 3.  Van de Graff generator.
 2.  Upgrade to XP - it will shut down every few hours but won't be much use 
when it's on.
