The DARPA Grand Challenge The challenge : Build a ground vehicle that will travel completely on its own from Los Angeles to Las Vegas along a prescribed corridor. Distance: around 210 miles, most off-road, through desert, rivers, and mountains The stakes : The first to complete the race in under10 hours gets $1,000,000. The date : March 13, 2004 The purpose : In the 2001 Defense Authorization Act, the U.S. Congress set a goal that by 2015, one-third of the operational ground combat vehicles will be unmanned. To speedup the development of such vehicles, the U.S. Congress authorized the Department of Defense (DOD) to conduct prize contests that reward advanced technology achievements. The organizer : The contest is being organized by DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Project Agency), the prestigious research and development agency in DOD that has pioneered major technology and defense breakthroughs such as the Internet, Stealth aircraft, smart bombs and the pilotless Predator aircraft. Its name and its work are distinguished among leaders in technology, science, defense and academia. The audience : The contest has already generated a lot of media interest and DARPA has received requests to create documentary of the event. DARPA has organized a four-day series of media events before, during and after the event.
