I had done this before and it worked pretty well on my old laptop. Unfortunately, I forgot which source I had used for installing Gnome. I think it might be deb http://people.debian.org/ ~fpeters/gnome2.4/ but its no where to be found now. Any of you guys tried gnome 2.4 on xandros? I like KDE but Kinda hooked on to Gnome. I am tempted to use sarge repositories to install but am afraid it might break something. Karthik, It seems that you can successfully install Gnome 2.4 on Xandros 2.0. I did a search of forums and here is a HOWTO for doing exactly that. http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=4747&highlight=gnome I briefly scanned the thread and, according to the posters there, it seems to work but, seems they decided to go backto KDE. As I am sure you aware, Xandros uses a HIGHLY tweaked version of KDE with some specialized libraries. When one ventures outside of the repositories set up by Xandros, the possibility of "breaking" the things that makes Xandros what it is becomes highly likely. I say back up and go for it. I enjoy trying to figure out things like that and see what happens. I have a drive tray and a bunch of unused drives that I use strictly for that purpose. If I want to experiment, I remove my "daily" drive, put another one in, do a fresh install of Xandros (12 minutes from boot up to desktop) and play away. If it works well, I swap the drives and incorporate the changes into my daily installation. I've learned a lot doing that like being able to compile and run the latest version of K3B which is a KICK ASS CD/DVD burning GUI application. Here are a few other threads ! from the Xandros forums regarding using Gnome on X2. http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=5175&highlight=gnome http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?p=31298#31298 You may also find the article entitled "Can A Geek Love Xandros?" by Robert Storey of DistroWatch. You can find it here. http://www.distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=review-xandros2 In the article he "takes the gloves off", removes the graphical login screen, sets it to boot to a console, etc and then starts changing stuff. Its been a while since I read it but it is a good read especially for those that think that Xandros is too "Window$ like" to be used by a geek. Also, I am sure that you are aware that Xandros ships with the required libraries to enable to user to run applications designed for the Gnome Desktop such as GAIM and Ximian Evolution. Let us know how it works what your thoughts are. Heck, even post them to the "Tips & Tricks" section of the Xandros Forums (www.forums.xandros.com).
