Ed,

Thanks so much for the detailed reply.

The pleasure is all mine. I am just excited that someone else is
equally as excited as am I and, being a newbie, that I can actually provide
some assistance to someone else. .....:)

I actually have some great news for a
change!! I was able to install gnome with this
________
deb ftp://ftp.demon.co.uk/pub/mirrors/linux/debian/ unstable main non-free
contrib
deb-src ftp://ftp.demon.co.uk/pub/mirrors/linux/debian/ unstable main non-free
contrib
deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US/ unstable/non-US main contrib
non-free
deb-src http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US/ unstable/non-US main contrib
non-free
____

So far Nothing seems to be broken. All i had to do is add the above to my
sources.list then do a
apt-get update
apt-get install gnome

note that I did not use "apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment" 'cause I
read somewhere that for sarge(isn't xandros based on sarge?) Yes, Xandros is
based on Debian 4.0 = Sarge. gnome is simply
available through apt-get install gnome.
well after that everything was simple. Had to install gdm as the final step.

That's pretty much all I did to get Gnome on my Xandros. I donno how I missed
this source on the fourm 'cause I had been searching since 5 am this morning.

That is awesome news. Keep us posted as you get into it. I will
probably play around with it a bit this weekend myself. This will be the second
weekend that I have had off since New Years weekend, so I am pretty excited.

Xandros is really a great distro. Its not bloated like others. I have xandros
running on my mom's desktop(back in India) and its been real easy for her to
use(unlike redhat9 which had a lot of stuff on her face).

I agree with you completely. Xandros isn't perfect yet, and it has come
a LONG way since version 1.0 in 2002, but, to steal a phrase from the country
group Alabama, it is "Close Enough To Perfect For Me', and I believe even
greater things will be coming soon. I am also glad that you mother is enjoying
her new Linux experience and doing so rather painlessly.

If you or anyone else is interested, there is a thread on the Xandros
forums regarding installing the 2.6.3 kernel and KDE 3.2 with Xandros 2.0. You
can find that thread here:
http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=5873&highlight= Now this does break
some things, but then there is also another thread here:
http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=5902&highlight= where the guy that
started the above thread (in Jackson, Mississippi, buy the way) got some of the
broken things working again.

I think they made a right decision by selecting just one desktop environment,
though I wouldn't comment which one is better. Besides I am biased towards
gnome for some reason.

Again, I agree, and, since KDE is really all that I have ever used in
Linux, I tend to be biased towards it, but do agree that sticking with only one
environment was a smart move for Xandros.
