If you want the 2.6 kernel, which I understand is pretty buggy, then
stay with Mepis or Knoppix. Mepis will install so that you can select
2.6 or 2.4.24 at boot up. I am a Xandros fan and have been using it with
great success for going on two years now. The real issue is what do you
want the desktop to do and who will be using the desktop? If it will be
a "family machine" with a bunch of Window$ refugees, then I can't
recommend Xandros too highly. If you are going to be using it, I'd
probably go with Mepis or SuSE. I played around a little today with SuSE
9.1 and, in general, I like it. It is not nearly as easy to install as
is Xandros or Mepis. It didn't find my sound card but I was able to get
it working. I never did get my WIFI card working either but it looks
very doable. If you need ISO's, I have Mepis, Knoppix, Xandros Open
Circulation, Slackware, SuSE, Mandrake 10, and FeatherLinux, to name a
few. Man I love broadband! Name your poison or poisons and it will be my
pleasure to burn off a copy for you.
