I don't think the latest Suse (9.1) is a bloated install.
In fact someone told me that the downloadable iso only 
offers certain things, unlike the full blown 5 iso package.
I think Suse is great for the desktop. Shouldn't hurt to give
it a try? Since you're in the mood, i suggest installing
several and going with what works best for you. Over the
past 3 years I've tried at least 10 different distros.
So far i'm sticking with Suse, but that could change.
I always love trying different stuff, so every now and
then i'll install something new and give it a try.
For instance, I tried Gentoo before, but wasn't man(geek)
enough to get it to work!
