[brlug-general] RedHat replacement?
*Notify me of any errors and I will revise.
**Those of you who are attempting this ask me if you have any questions. Also I
expect for you to read through this fully and realize that certain parts will
differ for systems.
Just because Anaconda can't handle grub.conf properly, that is no reason to
give up on FedoraCore 2. There is a future to the new, though still buggy, 2.6
kernel remake of RedHat9.
Before you see the file you should know something about my computer.
IDE-0 (first harddrive) has two partitions, the WinXP is on the second
partition.
IDE-1 has quite a few partitions, but the important one is the first partition
(/root) which contains FC2.
Here is my current grub.conf, notice how Anaconda handled linux fine. (P.S. It
shows two Fedora Cores because I upgraded the Kernel (not required) that was
handled by GRUB itself. Notice the WinXP part that I added.
***************************************************************************
# grub.conf generated by anaconda
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
# NOTICE: You do not have a /boot partition. This means that
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /, eg.
# root (hd0,0)
# kernel /boot/vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/hdb1
# initrd /boot/initrd-version.img
#boot=/dev/hdb
default=2
timeout=3
splashimage=(hd0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title Fedora Core (2.6.6-1.435.2.3)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.6-1.435.2.3 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.6-1.435.2.3.img
title Fedora Core (2.6.5-1.358)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.5-1.358 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.5-1.358.img
title WinXP
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
rootnoverify (hd1,1)
makeactive
chainloader +1
**************************************************************************
Now, to find out why I did this:
title WinXP } because that's what I want this selection's title to be.
map (hd0) (hd1)\
} These are added so that there are no conflicts between which drive is on the
primary harddrive.
map (hd1) (hd0)/
rootnoverify (hd1,1) Shows where to find XP, in this case it is on Hard Drive
One, Partition two. Grub starts with the number Zero (0) instead of one (1). If
you were being observant, you may ask, "Shouldn't it should be (hd0,1)
|HDone|2nd Partition| but thats why there is the *map* command.
makeactive } was added to make active that partition.
chainloader +1 } specifies a chainloader, in this case the boot.ini file for
most W!ndows systems.
**************************************************************************
So I have some recommendations on installing FedoraCore2.
DO NOT, ABSOLUTELY DO NOT ERASE OR MODIFY YOUR MASTER BOOT RECORD TO ADD GRUB,
OR ANYTHING ELSE. This will whipe out the bootloader for XP, rendering your
system useless.
I personally recommend, as do others, to install Linux on a totally separate
HardDrive. This will avoid many, and nearly all problems.
When Anaconda wants you to set up partitions, do it manually using the given
program in the installer. You will need (ofcourse) a /root partition, a Linux
Swap partition, and recommended, a /home partition. Add those to your harddrive
that you are putting Linux on, DO NOT modify your W!ndows HardDrive in any way,
as Linux can't handle partitioning NTFS filesystems.
During Bootloader configuration make sure you do not in any way modify the MBR
on your W!ndows harddrive.
Matter of fact, I created a second Master Boot Record on the HD I was
installing Fedora on and I chose to add GRUB there.
Here is how I did it.
1. During installation creat the proper partitioning and choose Advanced
Bootloader Configuration.
2. Select the HD you want the Bootloader on and that will also be the same HD
as the one you are installing Linux on.
3. Make install grub to the MBR on |the hard drive you're putting linux on|, in
my case it was /dev/hdb (second harddrive) and on the /root partition.
Then, a final step.
When your computer starts enter setup to change boot priorities. The harddrive
with the new MBR (w/ grub) should be on top of your XP harddrive (old MBR).
Reboot. If all is well, GRUB should load and you should have a Choice of :
FedoraCore or WinXP

Yeah, that's tricky. HP uses that funny partion to hide a full factory ISO so
you can re do Windoze when it dies. It would be good if Fedora's
configuration script could tell, but that's asking a lot. I imagine that HP
does it a little differently each time. An interactive Grub configuration,
with a list of partitions, fs and lables, asking the user where any other OS
is and what it is would be great.
