Howdy,

Michael Murray, of Gecko Computers, has asked the
BRLUG for help in setting up Linux Terminal Server for
the CLK (Computers for Louisiana Kids) Project, which
is a subproject of the CACRC (Capital Area Corporate
Recycling Council).

Michael and I met with David Grant, the CLK
Coordinator, yesterday morning and we showed him what
Linux was about and did a test install of LTSP on a
server box designated for a school near Ponchatoula.

I am not that familiar with LTSP, but it looks pretty
neat. We installed version 4.1.0, but it needs to be
tweaked a bit; such as trimming down the available
applications for student users, creating the user
accounts, etc. Basically, it needs to be setup and
tested with a couple of terminals so that Michael can
deliver it to the target school.

This is being seen as a pilot project for CLK to show
that LTSP can be used to re-purpose old Pentium I and
II boxen with Linux and then given to Louisiana
schools. The alternative is to junk perfectly good
boxes capable of running Linux, since schools think
they must have newer boxes to run the latest bloaty
Windows incarnation.

We need help. If you are familiar with configuring
LTSP, please respond. If you aren't familiar but would
like to help anyway, please respond. I am hoping to
get a small group together via a new mailing list
(tentatively [EMAIL PROTECTED]) to help this effort
along.

David Grant expressed much interest in Linux. They
sell a _lot_ of good, used computers and I could see
the potential to put Linux on every one of them. In
fact, he is testing Knoppix and partimage right now as
a tool to image hard drives for duplication on
multiple machines.

The LTSP server is ready and is basically sitting on a
workbench at the CACRC, waiting for final
configuration before delivery. Note: I hadn't ever
installed LTSP before, but 4.1.0, based on Fedora, was
a breeze to install.

We also need help with configuring some network cards
to boot off the LTSP server. I'm not exactly sure what
needs to be done here.

This is a really good project to show what can be done
with Linux to improve education in Louisiana and it
has a lot of potential to become much bigger. Please
help.

John Hebert
