So let me get this straight... I'll need digital cable which is
expensive. Then I'll need to rent a DVR for $10 a month, then I'll
need to pay an extra $5 for the service.

It just seems expensive if all you want to do is record regular cable.
I'll stick with tivo, or build a MythTV box.

I LOVE my directivo box, and it would be hard for me to part with.
You can buy a receiver for about $50 now, and the service is $4.95 a
month just like cox.
So I guess it's not that much different in price, I would just rather
not rent a DVR/Receiver.

4. Will I need to purchase or rent any special equipment to use Cox DVR?

You will be able to conveniently rent a DVR-enabled set-top from Cox
for just $9.95 a month. This box will replace your existing digital
box which you are currently renting at $4.15. In addition, customers
also pay $4.95 a month for the DVR service itself.

Besides a television set, there is no additional equipment needed to
enjoy Cox Digital Video Recorder.
