"Error loading sound: cannot mmap /dev/dsp" was quite irritating for a while when I was initially using ALSA under Gentoo (cs46xx and au8830 were hardly supported at the time, oss-emulation still didn't fix it) but echo "quake3.x86 0 0 direct" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss seems to work ok now for snd-intel8x0 on my NForce4 audio. I cannot get it running under x86_64 gentoo at the moment, but there is now a native icculus.org amd64 build of quake2 that's pacifying me for the time being.
