Joe, 

A couple of comments about your rant. While I agree with what you in
that if you are planning to do any kind of work, be it Network or
Systems administration, you should be very familiar with the equipment
you are going to support. There is no substitute for hands-on
experience.

However, I side with the masses who do not put up servers at home and
the ones who don't advocate it, simply because they do not want to
endure a battle with an ISP. Certainly ISP's are beginning to block
ports, and certainly, many of us have found very easy ways to bypass
those restrictions, we must not forget though, by that time, we've now
violated our Acceptable Use Policy with that respective ISP, not once,
but twice (by defeating a security measure and running a server).

Now, maybe I'm in the minority on this, but there are only two (major)
broadband players in Baton Rouge and I'm not jeopardizing my account
with my ISP, because I'm definitely not going to order a POTS line so
I can have DSL.
