In the free software world you just use OpenSSH. With ssh -X, I run my mail client graphically on my laptop from another machine in my network. The communications are encrypted, so I don't have to worry about people sniffing passwords and that kind of thing. This is far harder to crack than WEP and other half baked commercial junk. I could turn off the rest of my ports, but I'm much less worried about people that might hang out in my bushes than I am about the internet in general. The only person in range of my wifi is welcome to use it.
