Let's not forget that the Linux kernel started off with a flamewar 
between Linus and Tanenbaum on comp.os.minix :0)

One problem might be that the messages posted to the group are mostly 
anti_-MS and about whatever new spyware or IE exploit has been found, 
rather than actual discussion of linux.  (That's because Linux people 
are more rabidly anti-MS then they are pro-Linux) :)
